Chiropractic care, although around for centuries, is still often misunderstood by so many in our communities. We hear it when people call looking for information on our services and team. One of the largest misconceptions is that we, as chiropractors, “crack” backs. While we joke around our clinic that “we don’t support crack,” we take our role as educators quite seriously.

Let’s look at some of the myths surrounding chiropractic treatment as we strive to  help you understand the important role chiropractic care can have in your life.

MYTH #1: Chiropractors crack backs.
REALITY:There are many different types of chiropractic adjustments, but all are non-invasive and gentle in nature. The occasional “cracking” or “popping” sound you might hear during an adjustment is caused by the slight opening of the joint space that is created and the release of gas within that space. Think about when you open a bottle of soda (not that we recommend soda), but you do hear the gas escaping a popping and fizzing sound. Same principle here.

Before any adjustment, your chiropractic doctor will discuss which method of treatment they prefer to address your condition. Your comfort is their priority.

MYTH #2: Chiropractic care is about treating spinal pain.
REALITY:Chiropractic care at Waterdown Village Chiropractic & Wellness Group is not limited to the spine alone and definitely shouldn’t be limited to only those in pain. While it is true that the majority of people initially come to us for back pain (neck pain and headaches run a close second), the TRUTH is that chiropractors are trained to assess and care for all joints, muscles and nerves in your body. We work with our clients to understand the importance of a proactive approach to their health care.

Beyond back pain, here are some reasons (if you need one) for introducing chiropractic care into your life:

  • Headaches
  • Neck Pain
  • Pregnancy Discomfort
  • Labour & Delivery Support
  • Digestion
  • Stress Management
  • Joint Pain
  • Scoliosis
  • Sleep Issues
  • Extremity Conditions
  • Arthritis
  • Sports Injuries
  • Systemic Health Benefits
  • Other Health Conditions

MYTH #3: If I see a chiropractor once, I have to go for life.
REALITY:Like seeing your dentist for regular check-ups, people of all ages should have their spines checked for optimal wellness. You may not even know if your spine is out of alignment, like you often do not know if you have a cavity, but regular proactive chiropractic care can help reduce the impact of daily wear and tear on your body.

People that have had their spine regularly checked and adjusted, report better overall health and less incidents of pain. In the event of an injury, those under regular care “bounce back” to health much faster than those not under regular care. That said, your chiropractic care is completely in your control.

“Your spine houses your nervous system, which is the computer pathway for your entire body,” says Dr. Cheryl van der Mark, Family Chiropractor & Director of Waterdown Village Chiropractic  & Wellness Group. “Keeping your nervous system in check keeps your whole body in check. We believe that every client can achieve and maintain their optimal health with regular care.”

MYTH #4: I have to pay upfront for an extensive amount of chiropractic treatment.
REALITY: After a thorough health history and examination, if warranted, your doctor of chiropractic will propose a treatment plan of up to 12 to 24 visits before reassessing your condition. We believe that each client’s health journey is individual and should be treated as such, therefore, your customized care plan correlates to your specific activity level, spinal health and response to care. It is up to you to maintain, but rest assured that you will receive the best plan of care for your individual situation and nothing more!

MYTH: Chiropractic care is not safe for children.
REALITY:
Chiropractic care is safe and gentle for all members of the family and can be extremely valuable for children. Due to the cartilaginous nature of the paediatric spine, adjustment methods are extremely gentle and safe. It’s important, however, that these procedures only be attempted by qualified chiropractors as they are the spinal experts. We see so many children suffering from birth trauma, digestion issues, sleep issues, growth issues and we appreciate when parents give us the opportunity to help.

What are the biggest chiropractic myths or questions you have heard? Is there something that’s preventing you from having your spinal system checked regularly by a chiropractor? Let’s talk!
